What comes to your mind when you hear the word “love?”

Do you think of a person? Maybe a spouse, a parent, a child, a friend. Maybe you think of a pet or a possession. “I love my dog, Rover.” “I love my Corvette.” “I love ice cream.”

Do you get all sentimental? Do you feel nostalgic? Do you begin to daydream or remember?

Maybe hearing the word “love” makes you feel bitter or resentful. Maybe you’ve been hurt or betrayed or forgotten by someone you love. Maybe when you hear or read the word “love” you immediately think of God’s love. Maybe the phrase that comes to mind is, “I will never love again.”

What comes to my mind these days when I hear the word “love” is the Oscar-worthy wedding scene in The Princess Bride. As Prince Humperdinck and Princess Buttercup face the clergyman, that most unforgettable phrase wafts from his lips, “Twuuu wuuuv wiw fowwow you fowewer.” Translation: True love will follow you forever.

The other day I caught the ferry back to Harkers Island after spending the day at Cape Lookout. As I was driving back to Beaufort, I saw a sign in someone’s yard that read, “Love Your Bride.” I couldn’t help but mouth the phrase under my breath, “Twuuu wuuuv…”

A whole host of things come to mind when we hear that little four-letter word. One of my favorite descriptions of love is, “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it was, and always will be yours. If it never returns, it was never yours to begin with. If, however, it just sits in your living room, messes up your stuff, eats your food, uses your telephone, takes your money, and never appears to have noticed that you actually set it free in the first place, you either married it or gave birth to it.”

To be honest, it’s sometimes difficult to love people. And it’s hard to allow others to love you. Sometimes the payoff never materializes. Sometimes you get hurt. Sometimes it’s messy. Sometimes your get stuck. Sometimes the motives get warped. Sometimes, sometimes, sometimes.

But sometimes, “Twuuu wuuuv wiw fowwow you fowewer.”

At Beaufort Photography Co. we believe in twuuu wuuuv. We believe in the truth of love, the fairy tale of love, the necessity of love, the once-upon-a-time of love. We believe love is what makes two people sit in the middle of a bench when there’s plenty of room at both ends.
